Going beyond typical at-home care, professional teeth cleanings from our Greater Orlando, FL, dentists are thorough and involve the removal of stubborn plaque and tartar buildup. Visits of this nature are recommended every 6 months and begin with a thorough examination of the teeth and gums, followed by the use of specialized tools to meticulously clean and polish. Additionally, we may offer personalized oral hygiene advice while you’re in!

A teeth cleaning gets rid of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) using an array of dental tools.

Learn more about what happens during a dental cleaning and why they’re important below.

Breaking Down a Teeth Cleaning

The most basic form of a cleaning includes an exam/screening, scaling, polishing, and flossing. Some patients may also opt for other add-ons at this time such as a fluoride treatment or dental sealants. Our dentists will make recommendations about what we feel is best for your smile, but it’s always up to you to choose what you’d like in the end.

Regardless of if you decide to move forward with other preventive services or not, a standard cleaning will start with one of our hygienists using a small mirror to observe your teeth and gums. Mainly they’ll look for any signs of inflammation, decay, gum recession, and more. Anything found will then be brought to the attention of our dentists.

From there, we’ll move on to the removal of plaque and tartar around your gum line as well as in between each tooth. A tool called a scaler (hence the name, scaling) will help our hygienists accomplish this step. The use of a gritty toothpaste and high-powered electric brush will come next which will allow for a nice, deep clean.

Flossing and a final exam by one of our dentists will then round out the appointment. We’ll discuss additional treatment if needed and get you scheduled for next time!

Benefits of Regular Cleanings

Because teeth cleanings are safe and straightforward, there are not any significant drawbacks to receiving them twice a year. There are several advantages, however, which include:

  • Decreased chance of cavities or gum disease going unnoticed/untreated
  • Improved overall health as cleanings reduce the risk for heart disease, stroke, etc.
  • Prevention of chronic bad breath
  • Less costs over time (avoiding fillings, root canals, or other similar treatments)
