Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea?

Here at Classic Smiles we specialize in comprehensive evaluation and procedure for patients with sleep apnea or snoring. We are committed to offering an outstanding state of the art treatment for this condition by use of innovative methods and research. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where you suddenly stop breathing while you are asleep.

It can occur as an Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) where masses of tissue block your airway. It can also occur as a Central Sleep Apnea (CSA); this is a difficult to understand condition that is caused by the brain not sending messages to the lungs as it should. Some patients may have a blend of both conditions and may inhibit similar signs, also known as mixed apnea.

The Diagnosis Procedure

Usually, we will assess to determine if there is any symptom of sleep apnea. It is a simple procedure known as Polysomnogram (PSG), and it may require a study of your overnight sleep. We will book you in a sleep laboratory for the evaluation. Here we will carry out multiple tests such as brain activity, movement of your eyes, heartbeat, muscle activity, and breathing patterns. We also record the level of oxygen in your blood as well as the airflow. The findings will determine if there are any deviations from the normal flow. There are alternative home testing options available, but we recommend having it done by the professionals for a thorough and accurate diagnosis.

Before giving you the home test, we will carry out a complete evaluation to ensure there are no underlying conditions. You will also be asked to keep a record of your sleep pattern for two weeks. Here, you will take note of sleep time every night, waking time every morning and the number of times you wake up at night. By assessing this pattern, we can have a proper diagnosis and recommend a treatment option based on the findings.

We will not recommend a test if you are suffering from other sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleepwalking, restless leg syndrome, or narcolepsy. We shall carry out a complete evaluation to rule out other conditions such as heart disease, drug abuse, mental disorder, and the use of medication. Our team is dedicated to coming to the correct diagnosis so that we can then advise you on the appropriate procedure.

Treatment Options

Treatment for sleep apnea helps minimize snoring, boost your breathing when asleep, and improve the quality of your sleep. Other benefits include the reduction or complete elimination of health risks usually associated with sleep apnea. Oral appliance therapy is an alternative treatment for patients who may not tolerate airflow pressure machines.

Once we have made a proper diagnosis of sleep apnea, you will book an appointment to discuss the outcomes, and we will discuss with you the treatment options available. If you have any concerns about sleep apnea, we are just a phone call away. Call Classic Smiles at (407) 378-0139 today. Our friendly and professional team will always be happy to hear from you.
