Fluoride Treatment Ocoee FL

Young boy receiving fluoride treatment at Classic Smiles Family Dentistry in Ocoee, FLYou have probably heard about fluoride and how important it is when it comes to oral health. While a lot of people are somewhat familiar with it, they do not fully understand its importance in maintaining good oral hygiene. At Classic Smiles we offer specific fluoride treatments that deliver benefits you will not get from your everyday toothpaste or mouthwash.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride itself is an element that takes the form of a soft mineral which naturally occurs in water and many foods. It is used in compounds like sodium fluoride and monofluorophosphate to prevent tooth decay through the use of topical and systemic treatments. Municipal water systems are often fluorinated to prevent tooth decay on a widespread level, a practice heralded as one of the most important medical breakthroughs of recent times. Just as it helps to strengthen teeth, fluoride is used to treat several other bone diseases.

Benefits of Fluoride Treatments

A person’s tooth enamel loses and gains minerals every day. Acids that form from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth erode these minerals while substances like fluoride, calcium, and phosphate rebuild tooth enamel. When too many minerals are removed without being replaced, this can lead to tooth decay. Fluoride helps to prevent this process by making the teeth more resistant to acids and can even reverse the early stages of decay.

Our practice offers fluoride treatments for patients of all ages. Contrary to popular belief, they are not just for children. Since fluoride treatments can prevent and repair tooth decay, they are highly recommended for those with poor oral health, current cavities, eating disorders, who lack regular professional dental care, are undergoing orthodontic treatment, have high levels of oral bacteria, dry mouth, exposed roots, a poor diet, abuse drugs/alcohol, and/or those who are undergoing radiation therapy of the head/neck.

What to Expect

These treatments are not invasive and there is no pain. Fluoride treatments are administered through a gel, foam, or varnish. The substance is applied with a brush or cotton swab, used as a rinse, or applied using a tray that is kept in the mouth for a few moments. The only post-care for this procedure is to not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after the treatment. If you opt for a fluoride varnish, there is no waiting time at all. Just be sure not to brush your teeth until bedtime.

These prescription-strength fluoride infusions can be performed every 3, 6, or 12 months. Those at a higher risk of oral problems do benefit from regular treatments, so be sure to ask us what the best schedule for you would be. Classic Smiles can have you in and out during your lunch hour, so don’t let time be an issue when it comes to good oral health. If you are interested in a fluoride treatment give us a call at (407) 378-0139 to schedule one today. After all, you only get one set of teeth and we want to help you keep them looking great.
