Should I Brush the Roof of My Mouth?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Classic Smiles
Should I Brush the Roof of My Mouth?Brushing your teeth is not just limited to your actual teeth. When you eat or drink, food debris gets spread all over your oral cavity. This food debris combines with bacteria to form plaque, which can be very harmful to your teeth and gums if left in place. The best way to remove this plaque is by brushing twice per day for at least two minutes per session as well as using a mouthwash to rinse.

However, you need to brush much more than just your teeth and gums. You should also be brushing your tongue and even the roof of your mouth. The roof of your mouth accumulates tons of bacteria throughout your day. Failing to brush the roof of your mouth undoes all of the work you did to clean your teeth and gums because your saliva can spread and distribute remaining bacteria and microscopic food waste.

Why Should I Brush the Roof of My Mouth?

While it cannot get cavities, this bacteria left on the roof of your mouth can spread to your teeth. The bacteria trapped on the soft tissue of your oral cavity band together to form a biofilm. This biofilm is sticky and difficult to remove. In fact, it cannot be removed simply by rinsing your mouth with water and likely will not be removed through the use of mouthwash.

The best way to get rid of this potentially harmful biofilm is through brushing your mouth. You should also gently brush your cheeks as well to ensure that any and all food debris is removed. By practicing good oral hygiene and cleaning all areas of your oral cavity, you can help protect yourself from the dangers of cavities and gum disease.
