What Does Water Do to Improve Your Oral Health?

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Classic Smiles
What Does Water Do to Improve Your Oral Health?Drinking enough water every day is incredibly beneficial for your overall health, including your oral health. Here are just a few of the many ways that drinking water, especially water containing fluoride, can improve your oral health.

Fluoridated Water Strengthens Your Teeth

Tap water in the United States contains ADA- and AMA-approved levels of fluoride, which is a mineral that strengthens your teeth and helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is also found in toothpastes and other oral care products like mouthwash, but drinking tap water is an easy, cost-effective way to reap the benefits of this decay-fighting mineral.

Water Has No Sugar

In addition to being the best option for keeping you hydrated, water is the healthiest possible beverage. Water has no calories and no sugar, making it an excellent choice for all-day hydration. Sugary drinks, on the other hand, can contribute to cavities and tooth decay, not to mention other serious health problems like obesity and diabetes.

Water Cleans Out Your Mouth

Drinking water helps wash away bits of food, bacteria, and other debris that can get caught in your teeth and lead to plaque buildup and decay. While beverages like soda, fruit juice, and tea leave sugar and acid on your teeth that can attract bacteria and damage your tooth enamel, water washes away sugars and dilutes acids. We actually recommend rinsing your mouth with water after consuming an acidic or sugary beverage for this reason.

Water Fights Dry Mouth and Bad Breath

Did you know that your saliva is crucial in fighting tooth decay? Saliva contains phosphate and calcium, which keep your teeth strong. If your mouth gets too dry, you stop producing enough saliva, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay. Dry mouth can also lead to embarrassing bad breath. Drinking enough water throughout the day keeps your saliva production in check, preventing dry mouth and bad breath.
