Can It Hurt to Brush for Too Long?

Posted on 11/16/2020 by Classic Smiles
Can It Hurt to Brush for Too Long?Brushing your teeth is the first step everyone takes when it comes to maintaining your oral health. Even if you brush at least two times a day, you might be over brushing (brushing for too long or more than twice a day). Too much brushing can cause more harm than good. Brushing for long or all the time can lead to tooth damage. Over-brushing breaks down the tooth enamel and sometimes causes injuries to the gums. It can also cause cavities and sensitivity over time.

How to Know if You Are Brushing for Too Long?

Red swollen gums, strayed bristles, gum recession, and bleeding gums after brushing are some of the signs that you are over-brushing. Those who like using hard-bristled toothbrushes are more likely to brush harder and for a shorter time than those with a soft-bristled toothbrush will. But if you have the right toothbrush for your teeth, you are not likely to brush for two minutes. We recommend that you buy toothbrushes that have been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). We insist on our patients knowing how to brush correctly.

How To Brush Your Teeth

The main intention of brushing is to get rid of plaque because it can lead to tooth decay. To ensure that you get rid of all the plaque, you have to brush using the best technique recommended for you by our professional dentists. The best cleaning technique for your enamel is to do so in a circular motion and gently. In case you are having problems with the manual toothbrush, we recommend that you try an electric toothbrush. You must brush circularly instead of moving the brush back and forth. Ensure that you apply the right amount of pressure and do not brush for more than two minutes. We always demonstrate the process during an oral examination. Visit our offices to learn more about oral hygiene.
