How a Toothache Can Get Overlooked Instead of Being Seen as a Problem

How a Toothache Can Get Overlooked Instead of Being Seen as a ProblemSometimes tooth pain is not considered serious, until, of course, it is too late. You should never ignore a toothache, as this is an indicator that there is something wrong with your gum tissue or tooth. Sometimes the pain is called referred pain. Referred pain happens when something else is wrong in the body. Any toothache that is caused by decay will only get worse and not better.

Do You Have a Toothache?

If you have a toothache, it can range from mild to unbearable. You may feel a throbbing pain around the gum or tooth or experience a noticeably sharp pain whenever you bite down. Achiness around a tooth can also describe a toothache as can sensitivity to hot or cold foods or beverages. Some people experience a burning pain, which is rare. A fever may accompany the pain as well.

What Causes a Toothache

While tooth decay is the most common reason for a toothache, dental abscesses also cause the pain. An abscess is a condition where the decay has reached the tooth's pulp, and a bacterial infection develops. An abscess can appear at a tooth's root, on the gum next to the root, and on the gum tissue itself. The pain may radiate to the ear and neck and may worsen when you lie down. You may also experience facial redness and swelling. That is why you need to take care of a minor toothache right away, as it can turn into an abscess over time.

A toothache may also result when a tooth is impacted. This occurs when one of the teeth, normally a wisdom tooth, is stuck inside the gum or the bone. When this happens, the tooth cannot erupt or appear like the other teeth. Referred pain toothaches often occur as the result of sinusitis. Some toothaches are a warning sign of a future heart attack. As you can see, you cannot ignore any type of tooth pain. That is why we are here to help. Give us a call if you experience tooth pain and sensitivity. Make it your goal to schedule regular dental cleanings and exams at our office.
